News from EPI Today at 1 p.m.—Advocates, experts respond to bombshell report that DOL hid data on tip rule change

Worker advocates and experts will join a press call today, February 1 at 1 p.m. Eastern,  to respond to breaking news that the U.S. Department of Labor prepared—but then concealed—an economic analysis that found that workers could lose billions of dollars in wages under a controversial DOL proposal to allow employers to keep their workers’ tips.

The press call will include speakers from the National Employment Law Project, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Economic Policy Institute, and ROC United.

The news comes as President Trump’s DOL has proposed a change to roll back an Obama-era rule that protects tipped workers, including restaurant workers, from having their tips taken away by their employers. Should the rule change go through, service workers could lose control of a large portion of their earnings. The comment period on the rule change is set to end on Feb. 5.
