Tomorrow, February 4th, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) will join EPI Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Research Robert E. Scott and Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul on a media teleconference to discuss the latest EPI report, Currency Manipulation and the 896,600 Jobs Lost Due to the U.S.-Japan Trade Deficit.
In the study, Scott argues that Japanese currency manipulation—a major contributor to the U.S.-Japan trade deficit—must be addressed in negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In the past two years, Japan’s government has methodically driven down the value of the yen. As a result, the U.S.-Japan goods trade deficit has skyrocketed to $78.3 billion in 2013—reducing U.S. GDP by 0.75 percent, or $125.3 billion, and costing 896,000 jobs.
