Straw Men and Low Bars at the Post
A timely column by EPI senior economist Jared Bernstein shows the misleading picture created from a new Washington Post column by Steve Pearlstein that refuted concerns about the economic struggles faced by large swaths of working families.
In a column posted by TPM Café, Bernstein explains how this argument sets the bar too low in terms of expected living standards gains, downplaying the role of inequality and the growing gap between compensation and productivity. Bernstein also shows how cherry picking data used to claim many workers are doing well does not tell the whole story, a story that most people who are actively living it appear to understand quite well.
