News from EPI Media advisory: Trade experts to release new Economic Policy Institute study on effectiveness of U.S. Section 232 steel import restraints

On Wednesday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, economists with the Economic Policy Institute will host a Zoom press conference about their new report, “Why Global Steel Surpluses Warrant U.S. Section 232 Import Measures,” which demonstrates the effectiveness of these measures. The report’s authors will also be joined by Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, and other experts to be announced.

The new study found that steel import restraints implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act helped increase output for U.S. steelmakers, improved industry conditions, spurred investments, and created new jobs. The study also found that these Section 232 measures have had no meaningful impact on the prices of steel-consuming products, such as motor vehicles.

Speakers will give an overview of the report’s findings and then answer questions from the media. The report will be embargoed until the press call.
