On Tuesday, September 17 at 12:30 p.m. ET, Economic Policy Institute President Lawrence Mishel and economists Elise Gould and Heidi Shierholz will hold a media teleconference to discuss their analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2012 data on income, poverty and health insurance coverage.
Mishel, Gould and Shierholz are three of the co-authors of the latest edition of EPI’s “The State of Working America, 12th Edition,” which shows that the vast majority of American workers have not benefited from economic growth over the past 30 years, primarily due to economic policies that have exacerbated income inequality. Further, while the Great Recession officially ended in the summer of 2009, the labor market continued deteriorating through early 2010 and has since seen just enough job growth to keep up with population growth, but not enough to begin digging out of the hole left by the Great Recession. As such, the aftereffects of the Great Recession are still being felt through a persistently weak labor market, lower incomes for the majority of working Americans, and a poverty rate that remains elevated. During the conference call, Mishel, Gould and Shierholz will discuss how the 2012 data relate to these trends.
