  • Joanna Cruz, Member of Witnesses to Hunger, will share her experience as a single mom trying to care for her children while living in poverty
  • David Keller, President of the Academic Pediatric Association, will share information about the impact of toxic stress on the brains of young children in poverty
  • Renee Wilson-Simmons, Director of the National Center for Children in Poverty, will explore the demographics of poor and low-income children and families (geography, race, employment patterns)

  • Olivia Golden, Executive Director of CLASP, will open the panel with remarks on the connection between low wage work and child poverty
  • Avis Jones-DeWeever, Author and former Executive Director of the National Council of Negro Women, will offer remarks on the specific challenges facing working mothers
  • Elise Gould, Director of Health Policy Research at the Economic Policy Institute, will outline a policy agenda at local and federal levels to help working families raise healthy children
  • Steve Savner, Policy Director of Center for Community Change, will talk about current organizing successes in the states and a vision for the future

12:40 PM – 1:50 PM PANEL: SAFETY NET SOLUTIONS

  • Andrea Flynn, Roosevelt Institute Fellow, will moderate
  • Larry Aber, Professor of Psychology and Public Policy at NYU, will open the panel with remarks on the safety net programs that prove most effective for young children
  • Yolanda Minor, Early Childhood Coordinator at Save the Children in Mississippi, will provide insight to the challenges facing new mothers and the effectiveness of home visiting along with the need for additional resources
  • Eric Rodriguez, Vice President of Research and Policy at National Council of La Raza, will describe the challenges accessing the safety net for immigrant families, a growing share of children in poverty
  • Robert Greenstein, President of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, will outline the current state of the safety net and the priority funding areas
