On International Human Rights Day, economists convened in Washington for a vital discussion of employment as a human right. Lawrence Mishel, President of Economic Policy Institute spoke on a panel before Rep. John Conyers, Jr. and Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, with Ed Schultz of MSNBC as Moderator.
To the extent that employment is one of the most important mechanisms for the allocation of individual purchasing power, the right to employment should be seen as the critical foundation of economic democracy. If society cannot assure the survival of all citizens through employment access, it may be that the government has a special obligation to provide employment opportunities for all. Join us for a discussion on these matters and Rep. Conyers’ solution, H.R. 1000, the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Training Act.
